NLV Pharos is based in Oban and works for the Northern Lighthouse Board mainly in Scottish and Manx waters, servicing over 200 automatic lighthouses, buoys and beacons. She is also able to carry out hydrographic surveying and wreck finding and other commercial work under contract. She is the tenth NLB ship to carry this name which is named after the very famous lighthouse at Alexandria in Ancient Egypt, one of the 7 Wonders of the World. Pharos and her sister ship, Galatea were built in Gdansk in Poland in 2006/07. She is 85metres in length, 3599 gross tonnes and has 7 officers and 11 crew. Catalogue number M03 This model is 70mm or 2.5 inches in length. In 2020 there was a news item about this ship which was in Oban port. Because of lockdown the crew had to stay on board before their next duty. But from his gran's garden a little boy could see his daddy who was Captain of Pharos. A case of waving and not hugging. So as we were making Galatea it made a lot of sense to make Pharos too. Brilliant models imho. -

Here are is a model of S118 HMS Torbay of the Trafalgar Class from the Limited Edition issue by Tri-ang Minic Ships. One of 4 models made. It is mint and unboxed. Length 2.75 inches or 70mm The submarine number on the conning tower says S118 The correct name Torbay is diecast underneath. It should of course say S90 on the conning tower although numbers are not put on conning towers. Hmm Tri-ang code N793 and or P785 Trafalgar Class SSN - Originally designed for Cold War operations in the Mediterranean and North Atlantic the Trafalgar Class design was a follow on from the successful Swiftsure Class but incorporated many improvements making them both faster and quieter. The hull of is covered by anechoic tiles to absorb sonar signals and noise reduction is achieved through the pump jet propulsion system which is a multi blade rotor turned by a jet of water that is quieter than a conventional propeller. The lead ship HMS Trafalgar was completed in 1983 before the pump jet propulsion system was ready and has a seven bladed propeller instead. Like previous British nuclear submarines the Trafalgar Class boats have a "teardrop hull", the fin has been strengthened and the hydroplanes can be retracted to allow the submarine to surface through ice. The principle role of these "hunter-killer" vessels is to attack ships and other submarines and in this capacity they could support and protect a convoy or taskforce. With the fitting of the Tomahawk cruise missile system they will also be capable of a land attack role. The Trafalgar Class are fitted with cameras and thermal imaging systems that allow them to be used in a surveillance role. 5200 tons length 85 metres. . -
