Having made a Virginia Class it seemed right to make a full hull version as would be seen in a dockyard. This is a full hull out of the water/dry dock version of the Virginia Class submarine of which there are currently 17 in service with the US Navy and more being built. This is a second production run and these dont have a self supporting stand so need a dry dock or a bit of blue tack. Only just noticed this difference. 8700tons 370ft long. This is a painted and complete model of HMS Conqueror, a Churchill class submarine in 1250 scale made by CNCollectables in metal. HMS Conqueror was a Churchill class nuclear submarine which served in the Navy from 1971 to 1990. She was built at Birkenhead and was the third submarine of her class, following on from the earlier Churchill and Courageous. They were designed to face the threat at sea of the Soviet Union by attacking other ships and submarines, and spying on Soviet nuclear-armed submarine movements. Length 87m 285ft Beam 10m 33ft Displacement 4900 tonnes. Crew 103 Top speed 28knots. The model is about 70mm or 2.5 inches in length. Ref S07

One of ten Russian/Soviet boats in our range. This class was deployed by the Soviets in the 1980s. It was the largest class of submarine ever built at 48000 tons. Here are is a model of S118 HMS Torbay of the Trafalgar Class from the Limited Edition issue by Tri-ang Minic Ships. One of 4 models made. It is mint and unboxed. Length 2.75 inches or 70mm The submarine number on the conning tower says S118 The correct name Torbay is diecast underneath. It should of course say S90 on the conning tower although numbers are not put on conning towers. Hmm Tri-ang code N793 and or P785 Trafalgar Class SSN - Originally designed for Cold War operations in the Mediterranean and North Atlantic the Trafalgar Class design was a follow on from the successful Swiftsure Class but incorporated many improvements making them both faster and quieter. The hull of is covered by anechoic tiles to absorb sonar signals and noise reduction is achieved through the pump jet propulsion system which is a multi blade rotor turned by a jet of water that is quieter than a conventional propeller. The lead ship HMS Trafalgar was completed in 1983 before the pump jet propulsion system was ready and has a seven bladed propeller instead. Like previous British nuclear submarines the Trafalgar Class boats have a "teardrop hull", the fin has been strengthened and the hydroplanes can be retracted to allow the submarine to surface through ice. The principle role of these "hunter-killer" vessels is to attack ships and other submarines and in this capacity they could support and protect a convoy or taskforce. With the fitting of the Tomahawk cruise missile system they will also be capable of a land attack role.
